Political Correctness run amok
South Africa just received their first Type 209 submarine. Bully for them. At least they're not British.
Here's the bad part:
"The submarine, packed with advanced equipment, is a Type 209, of which 63 are currently in service with various navies around the world. It requires a crew of 30 and South Africa aims to have a racial balance on board reflecting that within its society."
See that? They want to crew a submarine according to a racial balance within society. That's daft. I can understand where they're coming from here, but a submarine is NOT the place to play social engineer. Try the President's honour guard for that. Or maybe his security contingent.

Excellent point. Why stop there? PC would seem to require women, too, but in SA history that may not be at issue.
Did you know Alan Gillespie? Ken Marr? Drop me a line if you still check your blog from time to time.

This comment is both off topic and politically incorrect.
Why does South Africa need submarines? The cities are in ruins. The farms lie fallow. The stock are all butchered and eaten. Are any of the factories still operational? I do not know.
They have two deadly enemies, themselves and AIDS. Submarines will not protect them from either. So definitely, these subs should have culturally diverse crews.
Hmmm, a "racially correct and balanced crew" seems a bit political, doesn't it? I wonder if they will paint the hull colors accordingly? ...sorry "colours" (forgot this IS a Canadian Blog!)
...snicker!

My name is Tony McNally I am a Falklands War veteran, who has PTSD. Over the years I have seen many of my fellow soldiers take their own lives due to their PTSD. More suicides than were KIA in the War. I have found that writing poetry has helped ,me in a big way and I would advise others to try and write things down. I have decided to put a book of poetry together to help raise funds for a UK mental health charity TALKING2MINDS http://www.talking2minds.co.uk/ if you would like to help spread the word or contribute or know of any other Canadian veterans or serving soldiers or families that might like their work published please let me know. it’s a for charity and you can keep your copyright. I want our Canadian brothers onboard to make this a truly International collaboration. Please send any contributions via email to remybenoit@gmail.com
